various emails I received over past few months.

I conceptualized
Eco Lumen while working on the energy management projects for Tata
Infotech's offices all over India in 1998-99. The idea to develop
an energy efficient lighting design software was selected for productization
through New Products Initiative launched by Software Products Group
of Tata Infotech in 1999. I was subsequently chosen to lead a small
development team to deliver a prototype. |

The response
to the prototype and reviews by various industry experts helped me
in getting the resources to develop the 1st version of Eco Lumen,
as a freeware tool. It was launched on Earth Day 2000, as part of
Tata Infotech's energy management promotion plan as conceptualized
by me and Dr. Nirmal Jain (then CEO, Tata Infotech). Eco Lumen™ was
a professional software or facility designers aimed at simplifying
the complex process of designing lighting layouts. At the same time,
implementation of scientific methods for design ensure that lighting
layouts designed using Eco Lumen™ save as much as 30% on their lighting
bills. |
| Eco Lumen™ was
ideal for building designers of commercial, industrial as well as
residential facilities. Traditionally designing lighting layouts has
been a complicated process where the designer needs to consider the
usage of the facility, output characteristics of the lighting equipment,
the room parameters such as dimensions of the facility for providing
the appropriate illumination. Use of Eco Lumen™ can reduce the time
required to design a facility by as much as 80% when compared to the
traditional approach. This easy to use decision support tool, not
only provides professionals, with scientifically calculated lighting
designs, but also recommends the designs optimized to reduce the electricity
bills for these facilities. |

An extremely
user friendly interface guided the user through various aspects of
lighting design, including the room specifications, selection of appropriate
light fixtures and the optimization of the energy consumption. Eco
Lumen™eliminated the time consuming re-work required for every change
in design parameter, thus providing the facility designer freedom
to experiment with various facility designs before selecting the optimal
design. Design changes can very easily & quickly implemented. The
flexible report generation module provided the designers an option
to customize the reports as per the requirement of their clients.

| Eco Lumen™ was
equipped with an extensive database of lighting products from leading
companies across the globe. Eco Lumen™ provided designers easy access
to the technical details of the individual components such as lamps
& fittings, as well as to the standards used in the calculations such
as the illumination levels. It allowed users to add new lighting products
into the database, either by specifying the technical parameters of
the product or by importing the photometric files. |

Eco Lumen™ took
the concept of implementing Energy Efficiency in facilities, beyond
merely the designing of new facilities. This revolutionary product
allowed the designer to upgrade existing facilities to greater efficiency
at minimum replacement costs. This feature gave the designers the
flexibility to compare various options for a room & then allows to
take select the appropriate design after considering the investment
as well as recurring costs. The software also included features for
calculating the life cycle costs and payback period for different
upgrade options. |
